Slain Toronto Officer Marc Pinizzotto Remembered as Hero at Funeral

Thousands of police officers from across Canada and the United States, along with dignitaries, packed the Toronto Congress Centre in Etobicoke on Wednesday to honor fallen Toronto Police Const. Marc Pinizzotto. The 43-year-old Emergency Task Force officer was shot and killed while executing search warrants in a North York high-rise on June 11, 2026. One of the warrants was linked to the March shooting at the U.S. Consulate.

Funeral Draws Thousands of Officers and Dignitaries

An estimated 10,000 police officers, as well as Ontario Premier Doug Ford, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra, Ontario Lt.-Gov. Edith Dumont, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, attended the 2 1/2-hour ceremony. Pinizzotto, married and father of 14-year-old twins Daniella and Domenic, was remembered as a devoted family man and a courageous officer.

According to a law enforcement source who spoke with the Toronto Sun, the bullet that killed Pinizzotto was a “fluke shot” that struck an area not protected by his vest. He died later in hospital.

Eulogy and Tributes from Colleagues and Family

Sgt. Ken Lefort, who leads the ETF unit, delivered the eulogy, noting he had known Pinizzotto for his entire 18-year career. “He made everyone better just by being around,” Lefort said. “So whether it was on the ice or in the lineup, he was a rock star. He was brave, disciplined and ultra reliable. To me, he was invincible.”

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said Pinizzotto, nicknamed “Pinner,” represented courage and excellence. “Policing is one of the few professions that cannot press pause, even when our world seemingly stops,” Demkiw said. “You all continue to show up, including the ETF, who literally continued to serve in the hours following Marc’s death despite the sorrow, the grief, the anger.”

Pinizzotto’s mother Linda pleaded for something positive to come from his death, describing her middle son as kind, loyal, and caring. “Marc is a hero. He stepped into policing with passion, dedication and an unwavering commitment to serving his community,” she told the silent crowd. “For Marc, policing was not simply a career, it was a calling, it was his legacy.”

Legacy of Service and Love

The ceremony highlighted Pinizzotto’s love for his family, the ETF, and hockey. Despite the sorrow, there was also an undercurrent of bitterness toward the criminals responsible for the tragedy. The procession before the funeral included a solemn display of blue tears for the 18-year Toronto Police veteran.
