Former Staffer Accuses Congressman Eric Swalwell of Sexual Assault and Misconduct
A former staff member for Representative Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democratic contender in the California gubernatorial race, has come forward with serious allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. The woman, who remains unnamed, detailed her experiences to the San Francisco Chronicle in a report published on Friday, claiming Swalwell engaged in sexual encounters with her while she was under his employment and too intoxicated to provide consent.
Detailed Allegations Spanning Multiple Years
The accuser stated she was hired to work in one of Swalwell's California offices in 2019 when she was just 21 years old. According to her account, Swalwell began pursuing her romantically and sexually within weeks of her employment. She alleges he sent explicit photographs of his genitals via Snapchat and requested nude images in return. The staffer provided a harrowing narrative of specific incidents, including one in 2019 where she blacked out after drinks with the congressman and awoke naked in his hotel bed, experiencing physical effects consistent with vaginal intercourse.
Further allegations describe an occasion where Swalwell allegedly attempted to kiss her while she was driving him home from a meeting. Another incident involved the staffer performing oral sex on Swalwell in a parking lot after he exposed himself and requested the act. In 2024, after she had left his employment, the woman says she encountered Swalwell at a charity gala where he forced himself on her while she was intoxicated. Text messages reviewed by the Chronicle indicate she told him to stop during the alleged assault.
Immediate Political Fallout and Campaign Disintegration
The publication of these allegations has triggered significant turmoil within Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign. Strategic adviser Courtni Pugh resigned immediately, along with at least four other staff members, as reported by Politico. The California Teachers Association, a powerful political organization, withdrew its endorsement of Swalwell's campaign. Representative Jimmy Gomez, who served as co-chair of the campaign, resigned his position, calling the accusations "the ugliest and most serious accusations imaginable" and urging Swalwell to leave the race.
Senator Adam Schiff, another California Democrat, also rescinded his support, stating he was "deeply distressed" by the allegations and believed Swalwell should withdraw from the gubernatorial primary. The congressman received a cease-and-desist letter from Swalwell's attorney on Thursday after the Chronicle contacted him for comment, according to the newspaper's report.
Swalwell's Firm Denial and Legal Threats
Representative Swalwell, who is married and seventeen years older than his accuser, categorically denied all allegations through his campaign. In an official statement, he characterized the claims as false and politically motivated, noting their timing just before an election where he is competing against the frontrunner for governor. Swalwell emphasized his nearly two decades of public service as a prosecutor and congressman, asserting he has always protected women.
"I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action," the statement declared. "My focus in the coming days is to be with my wife and children and defend our decades of service against these lies." Despite his denial, the allegations have created a substantial crisis for his political ambitions.
Potential Impact on California's Gubernatorial Primary
These serious accusations are expected to cause a major shakeup in the crowded Democratic primary for California governor. Swalwell had been polling alongside Representative Katie Porter and billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer as leading candidates. Democratic Party leadership has been encouraging lower-polling candidates to exit the race to consolidate support behind stronger contenders, aiming to prevent Republicans from securing a top-two position in the open primary and advancing to the general election.
The unfolding scandal introduces significant uncertainty into the electoral landscape, with Swalwell's campaign facing existential threats as key allies distance themselves and calls for his withdrawal intensify. The situation underscores ongoing concerns about power dynamics, consent, and accountability in political environments, particularly involving relationships between elected officials and their staff members.
