President Donald Trump once again raised the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, eliciting cheers and applause from a crowd of supporters in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Bragging about his election victory in the state, Trump continued to assert that Democrats “cheat like hell” before delivering a line that has become a staple of his rally speeches.
Trump's Third Term Tease
“Maybe we should run again. Should we run one more time?” Trump said. “I’d like to do that. I’d like to, but I got more votes than any candidate in the history of Pennsylvania. Can you believe that vote?” The comments were captured on video and shared on social media.
Throughout his second term, Trump has repeatedly teased the idea of seeking a third term, despite the U.S. Constitution prohibiting it. Just last month, Trump suggested he would be in office well past 2028. In addition to the rhetoric, the president sells “Trump 2028” merchandise in his official Trump store.
Bannon Pushes for Third Term
Noted Trump ally and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has also advocated for a third term. “He’s gonna get a third term,” Bannon told The Economist last year. “Trump is gonna be president in ’28, and people just ought to get accommodated with that.” Bannon has never offered specifics on how Trump would overcome the specific language of the 22nd Amendment.
Trump's Age and Denials
At the end of this hypothetical illegal third term, Trump would be 86 years old. When asked by reporters about the prospect, Trump has brushed off the idea without completely ruling it out. Last year, he told NBC News that he was not joking, saying, “A lot of people want me to do it.”
“I’m not looking at that,” he told reporters on Air Force One in March 2025. “But I’ll tell you, I have had more people ask me to have a third term, which in a way is a fourth term because the other election, the 2020 election, was totally rigged, so it’s actually sort of a fourth term.”
