US Destroys Iranian Boats, Intercepts Missiles in Hormuz

The United States military announced on Monday that it had destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted cruise missiles and drones launched by Tehran as part of an operation to ensure safe passage for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Operation Details

U.S. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of Central Command, confirmed the engagements but declined to comment on the status of a ceasefire that began on April 8. He acknowledged ongoing efforts by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to disrupt the operation, which was ordered by President Donald Trump to reopen the critical waterway to commercial traffic.

"The IRGC has launched multiple cruise missiles, drones, and small boats at ships we are protecting. We have defeated each and every one of those threats through the clinical application of defensive munitions," Cooper said.

U.S. Forces and Strategy

Cooper stated that he "strongly advised" Iranian forces to stay clear of U.S. military assets. The operation involves 15,000 U.S. troops, Navy destroyers, over 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, and undersea assets. U.S. commanders on scene have full authority to defend their units and commercial shipping.

When asked about escorting ships, Cooper explained that the U.S. is not using traditional escorts but rather a larger, multi-layered defensive arrangement. "If you're escorting a ship, you're playing kind of one on one. I think we have a much better defensive arrangement in this process," he said. The package includes ships, helicopters, aircraft, and electronic warfare to counter Iranian threats.

Blockade Status

Cooper also confirmed that a U.S. blockade of Iran, preventing ships from entering or leaving Iranian territory, remains in effect and is exceeding expectations.
