The YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre has officially changed its name to the Calgary Police Discovery Centre, marking its 30th anniversary with a special celebration. The centre, located next to the Calgary Police Service Headquarters in Westwinds, has spent three decades educating youth on community safety and crime prevention.
Renaming Celebration
A special event is planned for Wednesday evening, featuring a dramatic rappel by the CPS tactical unit from the roof to unveil the new name. Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Safety Mike Ellis will also present a check from the province to support YouthLink crime prevention programming.
Mission and Impact
Executive Director Tara Robinson emphasized that youth crime prevention remains at the heart of the centre's mission. “This new name reflects a bigger vision; we are excited to welcome more families, visitors, and community members through our doors to learn, explore, and take part in important conversations about prevention, safety, and connection,” Robinson said. “And about policing from 1885 to modern day.”
Over the past 30 years, more than 500,000 people have participated in field trips, outreach programs, community events, and visitor experiences. Approximately 6,000 students and youth engage in on-site learning each year, while outreach programs reach around 25,000 youth annually.
Programs and Topics
The centre's programming covers a wide range of topics, including cyber safety, healthy relationships, gangs, gun violence prevention, drug awareness, and forensics. A full school year of field trips has already been booked, with 7,000 students registered and every field trip currently waitlisted.
Although the public destination name is changing, YouthLink will remain the name for all youth crime prevention programming, with all signature programs under the same umbrella.
Grand Reopening
Calgarians are invited to attend the grand reopening on May 23, where guests can explore interactive exhibits, family activities, police demonstrations, and a new cyber safety centre.
