NOSM University has issued a warning that northern Ontario is still facing a shortage of 460 doctors. While half of its 1,041 graduates have chosen to stay and practice in the north, gaps in family medicine persist.
Shortage details
The university's latest report indicates a deficit of 459 physicians across the region. Despite efforts to train and retain local medical professionals, the demand for family doctors remains unmet.
Graduate retention
Approximately 50% of NOSM University alumni have remained in northern Ontario, contributing to healthcare in underserved communities. However, this retention rate is insufficient to close the gap.
The ongoing shortage highlights the need for continued investment in medical education and recruitment strategies tailored to the north's unique challenges.
