In honour of Red Dress Day on May 5, community members assembled at The Gathering Place in Regina for an event raising awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). The gathering featured a beading activity where participants created small red dresses, a powerful symbol of the MMIWG movement used across Canada.
Event Highlights
After listening to a speech from Janna Pratt, attendees picked up felts and sewing needles to bead their own small red dresses together. The one-hour activity allowed participants to reflect on the significance of the day while engaging in traditional craft.
Photojournalist Coverage
Regina Leader-Post photojournalist Heywood Yu captured the event on Tuesday morning. His images show participants deeply involved in the beading process, including Colby Worm pulling a needle through felt, people organizing their threads, Dalin Cyr holding a beading needle, and Devon Thompson speaking with Jenny Enriquez.
