Violent Carjacking Triggers Overnight Police Chase
A dramatic series of events unfolded in Calgary during the early hours of Sunday morning, culminating in a suspect's arrest after a dangerous driving spree that included an attempt to travel the wrong way on Deerfoot Trail.
The incident began at 1:57 a.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, when Calgary Police Service responded to an assault and carjacking report along the 900 block of 32 Avenue N.E.. According to authorities, a suspect assaulted a man, stole the keys to his black Honda CRV, and fled the scene.
The victim of the carjacking sustained only minor injuries from the assault. An initial police search of the area failed to locate the stolen vehicle.
HAWCS Helicopter Tracks Dangerous Driving
The situation escalated shortly after when the stolen Honda CRV was spotted driving at high speeds into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes of Crowchild Trail S.W.. This reckless action prompted the deployment of the Calgary Police Service's HAWCS helicopter.
The HAWCS air unit successfully located the vehicle near 17 Avenue S.W. and began monitoring it from a safe distance. Staff Sgt. Mike Sushelnitsky of the CPS Real Time Operations Centre emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating the suspect's actions "created an extremely dangerous situation for everyone on the road."
He further noted that "This incident required a significant amount of police resources to safely resolve. Through a co-ordinated response of our patrol officers and support units, including HAWCS, we were able to intervene, preventing further risk to the community."
Arrest After Attempted Wrong-Way Deerfoot Drive
After driving into the community of Cranston, the suspect allegedly attempted to steal other vehicles, further compounding the criminal activity.
The pursuit reached a critical point when the suspect attempted to drive into oncoming traffic on Deerfoot Trail S.W.. In response, Calgary police moved to immediately stop the vehicle.
Officers successfully took the driver into custody without incident after the suspect drove off the road on Deerfoot Trail S.W. Fortunately, no members of the public were injured during the entire ordeal.
Police have confirmed that charges are pending against one individual and that no suspects remain outstanding. The coordinated efforts of ground patrols and the HAWCS helicopter were credited with bringing the dangerous situation to a safe conclusion.
