Calgary police have announced charges against a local man following an incident where a protester was struck by an SUV outside a place of worship in southeast Calgary. The altercation took place in the 400 block of Meridian Road S.E., where approximately 12 individuals had gathered to protest a religious event. According to authorities, a man driving an SUV steered his vehicle toward the protesters, striking one person after individuals from the worship center exited the building and issued verbal threats. The victim sustained minor injuries in the collision.
In a news release, the Calgary Police Service highlighted that the protest was connected to "recent geopolitical events," prompting investigators to examine whether hate played a role in the driver's actions. Acting Supt. Cory Ma emphasized the department's commitment to impartiality, stating, "Our role is not to take sides in political disputes, however when the incident involves threats, violence or intimidation, it is our responsibility to conduct a fair and objective investigation."
