Calgary woman charged in mother's homicide

A 52-year-old Calgary woman has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of her elderly mother in what police are calling a domestic incident.

Discovery and Initial Response

On the morning of Thursday, January 9, 2026, Calgary police officers responded to a residence in the 13000 block of Canterbury Gardens S.W. after receiving reports of a deceased woman. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of an octogenarian inside the home.

Victim Identified, Homicide Confirmed

The victim has been identified as 83-year-old Sharon Helene Roberts. An autopsy conducted on Friday, January 10, led the Calgary Police Service to officially rule her death a homicide. In a news release issued Saturday, authorities stated the incident was domestic in nature.

Arrest and Charges Laid

Following the autopsy results, investigators arrested the victim's daughter on Friday. Tonnya Marisse, 52, of Calgary, was taken into custody at a home in the 0-100 block of Stradwick Rise S.W. She now faces a single charge of second-degree murder in connection with her mother's death.

Marisse is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Police have indicated that no other suspects are being sought in this case. However, detectives continue their investigation and are appealing to the public for information. They are keen to speak with any potential witnesses who may have relevant details.
