Calgary Abuse Victims Face Deadline for Compensation Claims

Individuals who allege they were sexually abused decades ago by two teachers at Calgary's John Ware School now have a firm deadline to seek compensation from a multi-million dollar settlement. Claims must be submitted by 10 a.m. MST on January 26, 2026, according to a recent announcement from class action lawyers.

Details of the Settlement and Legal Process

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and its insurers agreed to a settlement totalling $15.77 million to compensate victims. This agreement, which received court approval on December 12, 2025, resolves a class action lawsuit originally filed against the school board.

The lawsuit alleged that former teachers Fred Henry Archer and the late Michael Gregory were involved in physical and sexual abuse of students at John Ware School over a period spanning from 1988 to 2004. Gregory died by suicide shortly after criminal charges were laid against him.

In a press release, lawyers David Corrigan and Meaghan Potier stated, "Among other things, the (court) order sets out that class members have until Jan. 26, 2026, at 10 a.m. MST to make their claim to class counsel." After this date, class counsel will seek final court approval for all claims against the CBE.

Options for Alleged Victims and Ongoing Criminal Case

The class action included three named plaintiffs representing distinct groups: alleged sexual and physical assault victims of Archer, alleged physical assault victims of Gregory, and alleged sexual assault victims of Gregory.

Individuals who believe they were victimized by either teacher have the right to opt out of the settlement agreement. Those wishing to pursue independent legal action must contact HMC lawyers to obtain the necessary opt-out form.

Separately, the criminal case against Fred Archer continues. The 80-year-old former teacher is scheduled to stand trial next month on allegations he abused two boys.

In November 2025, following the settlement agreement, the Calgary Board of Education issued a public apology. "The CBE commends the strength and courage of the class members who came forward to share their experiences and to participate in the court process," the board stated, also apologizing for the hardship experienced by victims.
