Former School Director Sentenced for Student Assaults
John Olubobokun, the former director of a private Christian school in Saskatoon, has received an 18-month conditional sentence for assaulting multiple students with a wooden paddle. The sentence will be served in the community under strict supervision.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing Details
Judge Lisa Watson delivered the decision on Thursday, November 20, 2025, in Saskatoon Provincial Court. Olubobokun had been convicted in July of nine counts of assault with a weapon following a trial that began in June 2024.
The conditional sentence requires Olubobokun to live at an approved residence and abide by a curfew. He must also remain available for random checks and cannot possess any weapons. Additionally, the court imposed a no-contact order, prohibiting him from communicating with any of his victims except through legal representation.
Disturbing Testimony from Former Students
During the trial, nine former students of Christian Centre Academy provided compelling testimony about their experiences. They described being subjected to what was termed scriptural punishment in Olubobokun's office.
The assaults occurred between 2003 and 2007 while Olubobokun served as director of the school, which has since undergone multiple name changes. Former students reported being struck with such force that the wooden paddle sometimes broke during the beatings.
One particularly disturbing account came from a former student who testified about being struck hundreds of times when he was just 12 years old. Multiple witnesses described sustaining bruises from the paddlings.
Judge Rejects Defendant's Testimony
Olubobokun testified in his own defense during the trial, denying all allegations against him. However, Judge Watson found his testimony not credible, noting that he attempted to minimize his role in operating the school and shifted blame to others.
The judge's assessment significantly influenced the sentencing decision, as the court determined Olubobokun showed little acknowledgment of responsibility for the assaults.
This case represents only part of the legal challenges facing Olubobokun, who remains before the court on additional assault charges. The school where the incidents occurred has operated under different names over the years, including Legacy Christian Academy and currently as Valour Academy.
