Fatal Crash in Burnaby: Police Seek Witnesses

Burnaby RCMP is urgently appealing to the public for information following a deadly two-vehicle collision that claimed one man's life in the early hours of Monday morning.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The serious crash occurred on Austin Road near Gatineau Place, just a short distance from Lougheed Highway. Police were called to the scene at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Tragically, the male driver of one of the vehicles involved was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle remained at the location following the collision and is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.

Police Investigation and Road Closures

Cpl. Laura Hirst of the Burnaby RCMP confirmed that the cause of the crash remains under active investigation. In connection with their work, police closed down roads in the immediate area, warning commuters to anticipate significant delays during the morning rush hour.

"Our investigators are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this tragic loss of life," stated Cpl. Hirst.

Appeal for Dashcam Footage and Witnesses

The Burnaby RCMP has issued a public plea for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who was driving in the area with a dashcam to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in any video or accounts from Austin Road, in either direction, between 5:10 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

"If you witnessed the collision and have not spoken to police, or if you have dashcam video in the area, please contact our investigators," emphasized Cpl. Hirst in an official news release.
