Former Pastor Charged in Historic Sexual Assault Case
Ottawa police have charged a former pastor at the Chinese Christian Church of Ottawa with historic sexual assault, authorities announced Thursday. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred several years ago, though specific details have not been disclosed to protect the victim's identity.
The accused, whose name has not been released pending court proceedings, was arrested earlier this week and faces one count of sexual assault. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Police say the investigation began after a victim came forward to report the alleged assault. Detectives from the Ottawa Police Service Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section led the inquiry, which culminated in the arrest.
In a statement, police emphasized their commitment to investigating historic sexual offenses and encouraged other potential victims to come forward. “We understand that reporting such incidents can be difficult, but we are here to support survivors and hold offenders accountable,” a spokesperson said.
The Chinese Christian Church of Ottawa has not publicly commented on the charges. However, church officials are cooperating with authorities, according to police.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address sexual violence, even when allegations involve events from years past. Ottawa police urge anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
