After an investigation spanning more than three years, a Barrie jury recently convicted four individuals on charges of human trafficking and related offenses. The convictions stem from Project Chameleon, launched in May 2023 when South Simcoe Police Service officers responded to a report of a woman being held against her will at a residence in Innisfil, just south of Barrie.
Victim's Report Sparks Investigation
The victim reported being exploited for sex trafficking and also disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted by one of the male suspects involved in trafficking her. Police continued their investigation, identifying additional suspects and victims over the following six months.
Suspects Apprehended
On November 1, 2023, officers from South Simcoe, Barrie, and York Region executed search warrants at properties in Innisfil and Newmarket, leading to the arrest of three individuals on charges including human trafficking, sexual services, and drug offenses. Later that month, a fourth suspect surrendered after a warrant was issued. In December 2023, three more suspects were arrested and charged.
Convictions and Guilty Pleas
On June 3, 2026, four accused were found guilty after a 10-week trial at the Barrie courthouse:
- Tyrone Dias, 40, of Newmarket, and Jashyna Singh, 32, of Mississauga, were each convicted of two counts of material benefit from trafficking, procuring sexual services, material benefit from sexual services, and three counts of human trafficking. They are scheduled to stand trial on drug charges in November.
- Joseph Carvalho, 46, of Newmarket, was convicted of human trafficking and two counts each of material benefit from trafficking, procuring sexual services, and material benefit from sexual services.
- Oneil Hopkinson, 40, of Newmarket, was convicted of procuring sexual services, material benefit from sexual services, two counts each of human trafficking and material benefit from trafficking, and sexual assault.
All four appeared in court on Monday, where Superior Court Justice Jill Cameron sought a date for sentencing submissions, though no date has been set yet.
Additional Case Developments
One accused had charges withdrawn in February 2024 after entering a 12-month peace bond. Another accused, Edgar Martinez, 39, of Innisfil, pleaded guilty to human trafficking and sexual assault in March and received a five-year prison sentence. The final unnamed accused is scheduled for trial later in June, according to police.
