A 26-year-old Hamilton man has been arrested and charged with assault and robbery in connection with a shooting incident over the weekend in the city's north end. Despite the arrest, Hamilton Police confirmed that their shooting response team is continuing to investigate the event, which occurred late Friday outside 40 Oxford Street in the Strathcona neighbourhood.
Details of the Shooting Incident
While no injuries were reported from the shooting itself, police indicated that a robbery victim sustained minor injuries from an assault. Authorities believe the incident was targeted, with two suspects fleeing the area on foot. In response, the shooting response team executed a search warrant at an apartment at 40 Oxford Street, believed to be associated with the shooting, with assistance from 10 Division officers. A police presence will remain at the location until the search is complete.
The arrested individual, Yonis Mohamed, faces charges including robbery with a firearm, assault with a weapon, and failure to comply with a probation order. Police are still seeking a Black male suspect described as being in his mid-20s to early 30s, approximately 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 with an average build. He was last seen wearing a dark blue sweater and dark pants.
Second Shooting Under Investigation
In a separate development, Hamilton Police are also investigating another shooting that occurred early Saturday morning in central Hamilton. The incident took place on King Street, between Gibson Avenue and Proctor Boulevard, where investigators found spent shell casings consistent with a shooting upon arrival.
Police have stated there is no information linking this shooting to the Oxford Street event. As of now, no victims, intended targets, or suspects have been identified in the King Street case. Authorities are urging anyone with information, including surveillance footage from between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., to come forward.
Fatal Crash on Hamilton Mountain
Meanwhile, a tragic early Sunday morning crash on Hamilton Mountain has resulted in two fatalities. Emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle collision at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Claremont Drive, near where the Claremont Access becomes Upper James Street at the top of the escarpment.
The driver and a passenger, both from Hamilton, were pronounced dead at the scene. Police are asking any witnesses or individuals with video footage of the area around that time to contact investigators to aid in the probe.
