Abdimalik Dahir Mohamed, convicted of manslaughter in the 2021 shooting death of Ahi S. Ebrotie in Regina, has formally abandoned his attempt to appeal his prison sentence. The decision, filed with the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, provides no explanation for ending the legal challenge.
Conviction and Sentencing in Fatal Shooting
In May 2024, Court of King’s Bench Justice Beverly Klatt found Mohamed guilty of manslaughter for his role in the attack that killed 29-year-old Ahi S. Ebrotie. The victim was shot at least 11 times outside an east Regina apartment building in what the judge later described as an "execution style" murder.
Mohamed originally faced a charge of murder, but Justice Klatt concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove he was the shooter or that he knew of a plan to commit murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, he was convicted on the lesser charge.
In September 2024, Justice Klatt sentenced Mohamed to 10 years in prison. After receiving credit for the time he had already served in remand, his remaining sentence was just over six years.
The Path of the Appeal
Following his sentencing, Mohamed initially filed an appeal targeting both his conviction and the length of his sentence. He later revised his legal strategy, choosing to drop the appeal of his conviction and focus solely on challenging the sentence he received.
However, that challenge has now been terminated. A document dated October 30, 2024, and filed with the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal indicates Mohamed has abandoned his sentence appeal entirely. The court filing does not state any reasons for this decision.
Evidence Presented at Trial and a Co-accused at Large
The trial evidence established that video footage showed Mohamed and another man, Ismail Ahmed Hassen, walking toward the corner of the building where Ebrotie was killed just before the gunfire erupted. The court also heard that a vehicle connected to Mohamed was moved closer to the scene moments before the shooting and was seen fleeing immediately afterward.
While Mohamed's legal proceedings have concluded, the case remains partially open. Ismail Ahmed Hassen is still wanted by the Regina Police Service in connection with Ebrotie's death and remains at large.
The abandonment of the appeal brings a definitive end to Mohamed's legal battle, finalizing the 10-year sentence for his involvement in the 2021 homicide that shocked the Regina community.
