The husband of a missing Michigan woman in the Bahamas has been released from police custody, authorities confirmed on Monday. This development comes as a photo allegedly showing bruises on Lynette Hooker's back was posted online, adding a new layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation into her disappearance.
Police Statement and Legal Confirmation
The Royal Bahamas Police Force announced Brian Hooker's release in a statement posted on Facebook. "The decision to release the individual was made following consultation with the Department of Public Prosecutions, which recommended that no charges be filed at this time pending the outcome of further investigations," the statement read.
Although police did not name Brian Hooker specifically in their statement, his lawyer, Terrel Butler, confirmed the release to NBC News. Butler reportedly stated that authorities "had no evidence" against his client and were compelled to release him.
Details of the Disappearance
Lynette Hooker, 58, was reported missing on April 5 after allegedly falling off a dinghy while traveling with her husband from Hope Town to their yacht in Elbow Cay, according to the New York Post. Brian Hooker claimed that his wife was swept away by strong currents and that she had the keys to the dinghy when she went overboard, causing the engine to shut off.
After losing sight of his wife, Brian Hooker reportedly paddled back to shore, arriving at Marsh Harbour Boat Yard in the early hours of April 5, where he reported her missing. He was taken into custody five days later, on April 10.
Police Maintain Suspect Status
Despite the release, Royal Bahamas Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles told NBC News that Brian Hooker remains a suspect in the investigation, which is still active. Knowles also expressed hope that authorities could still find Lynette Hooker alive.
Brian Hooker's lawyer emphasized that his client "categorically and unequivocally" denies any wrongdoing related to his wife's disappearance, as reported by the New York Post.
Allegations of Abuse and Online Photo
The release coincided with the online posting of a photo purportedly showing bruises on Lynette Hooker's back. The image was shared by journalist-turned-podcaster Ashleigh Banfield on Facebook, who obtained it from Lynette's mother, Darlene Hamlet.
In a recent episode of the Drop Dead Serious podcast, Hamlet told Banfield that her daughter had tried to leave Brian Hooker "multiple times" during their more than 20-year marriage. Hamlet stated that Lynette took the photo as "a reminder not to go back to Brian," adding, "She was embarrassed that her marriage was failing, and she went back."
