Essex County OPP Officers to Pack Groceries for Annual Cop Camp Fundraiser
Essex County OPP officers are rolling up their sleeves for a unique community fundraiser this Thursday. Officers will be packing groceries at two local Zehrs supermarkets to support the annual Essex County Cop Camp, one of the camp's most significant fundraising events. The grocery-packing initiative runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at both the Kingsville and Tecumseh Zehrs locations.
Supporting Youth Leadership Through Community Engagement
The Essex County Cop Camp, held annually at Gesstwood Camp and Education Centre in Essex, provides approximately 80 Grade 6 students with a week-long experience focused on leadership development and positive interaction with law enforcement. The camp operates entirely free of charge for selected participants, with all funds raised during the grocery-packing event directly supporting camp operations.
"The camp costs nothing for the campers who are selected to attend, and all monies collected during the Grocery Packing fundraiser goes directly towards the cost of running the camp," explained OPP officials. This community-driven approach ensures that financial barriers don't prevent students from participating in this valuable experience.
A Decades-Long Tradition of Community Policing
The Essex County OPP Cop Camp has been serving the community since 1994, when it was first organized through the efforts of the Kingsville detachment of the OPP. What began as a local initiative has grown into a county-wide program with support from detachments throughout Essex County.
The camp's funding model relies exclusively on donations and fundraising events like the grocery-packing initiative. Students enter the program through their schools' OPP Grade 6 kids program, with teachers selecting participants based on various criteria. This selection process ensures that students who can benefit most from the leadership experience have the opportunity to participate.
How the Community Can Participate
Community members who visit the Kingsville or Tecumseh Zehrs stores during the fundraiser can:
- Have their groceries packed by Essex County OPP officers
- Make donations to support the Cop Camp program
- Complete a ballot for a chance to win a gift basket
The event represents a tangible example of community policing in action, with officers engaging directly with residents while supporting youth development. The grocery-packing fundraiser not only raises essential funds but also strengthens relationships between law enforcement and the community they serve.
This year's event continues a tradition that has provided thousands of Essex County students with memorable experiences and valuable leadership skills over the past three decades. The program's longevity speaks to its importance within the community and the ongoing commitment of Essex County OPP to youth engagement and development.
