Oshawa stabbing charge; Georgetown shooting suspect arrested

A 30-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a stabbing in an Oshawa parking lot on June 14. Durham Regional Police responded to the area of Simcoe and John Streets around 10:30 p.m. after reports of a large physical fight. Officers found one male with minor injuries, taken to a local hospital, and another male with multiple stab wounds, taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre in serious but non-life-threatening condition, later upgraded to stable.

Charges Laid in Oshawa Stabbing

On Wednesday, Steven Edward McCarthy, of no fixed address, was located in Oshawa and charged with two counts of administering a noxious substance and breach of probation, and one count each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous, and possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking. At the time of the incident, the accused was under weapons prohibition conditions.

Georgetown Shooting: Man Accused of Firing at Vehicle

A 30-year-old man faces charges after a car was shot at in the parking lot of Dominion Gardens Park in Georgetown on Monday. Halton Regional Police responded around 5:15 p.m. and confirmed multiple shots were fired at a parked vehicle while members of the public were in the area. No one was struck and there were no reported physical injuries. Investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

Sattya Him, of Mississauga, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with two counts of attempted murder and discharge firearm with intent, and one count each of unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, pointing a firearm, and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Boater Impaired After Oshawa Man Drowns

The Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police reports that a 39-year-old Oshawa man drowned on Tuesday afternoon after falling off a boat in the Otonabee River. Emergency responders arrived around 2:30 p.m. The victim was not wearing a life jacket. The boat had been travelling east when another boat passed, causing one of four individuals on board to fall into the water.

A nearby OPP marine unit contacted the three remaining individuals, who had allegedly been consuming alcohol. The vessel operator provided a breath sample and was arrested. Jayatharssan Yogaratnam was charged with operation causing death and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus). The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located the victim's body shortly before 9 p.m.

Girl, 4, Hit by Car in Ajax

A four-year-old female pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck by a Honda Civic in Ajax on Tuesday. Durham Regional Police responded to Keith Wright Crescent and Gillett Drive around 8:15 p.m. The young girl was crossing the street when hit. She was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The 16-year-old driver and 38-year-old passenger were not injured and remained on scene.

Boy, 16, Charged After Whitby Crash

A 16-year-old boy faces charges following a single-vehicle crash on Duffs Road south of Townline Road West, north of Brooklin, on June 11 around 8:30 p.m. Police say an Audi sedan was travelling north when it lost control, went off the roadway, and caught fire. Two occupants were injured. The 16-year-old driver suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre; his condition has since been upgraded to stable. He was charged with dangerous operation and stunt driving. A 17-year-old passenger was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Man Drowns in Muskoka Lake

Ontario Provincial Police located the body of a 67-year-old Bracebridge man who fell overboard near Sandy Bay in Bracebridge on Wednesday. Bracebridge OPP and the OPP Marine Unit responded to a distress call around 5:45 p.m. The couple was returning to Bracebridge when weather conditions changed suddenly, making navigation difficult. The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, with aviation support, recovered the man's body on Thursday just before 12 p.m.

Toronto Fire Services Reports Spike in Canada Day Calls

Toronto Fire Services responded to 746 incidents over a 24-hour period on Canada Day, 51% above the three-year average. According to a social media post, crews handled 203 fire suppression calls, 417 medical calls, 56 hazmat/CBRNE/carbon monoxide calls, and 39 rescue calls. “Through a busy Canada Day, our crews and communications staff remained focused on keeping #Toronto safe,” TFS wrote.
