Southern Alberta RCMP Officer Faces Fraud, Theft Charges

An RCMP officer serving in southern Alberta and his spouse are confronting serious criminal allegations, including fraud and theft, according to the Alberta RCMP.

Charges Laid Following Extensive Investigation

The Alberta RCMP announced the charges on Friday, stemming from an incident first reported in May 2024. Authorities were alerted to a potential fraud involving a serving member of the RCMP and his wife, prompting what the force describes as an extensive investigation.

The individuals charged are Grant Shade, 42, a constable with the Piikani RCMP, and Katrina Shade, 40, a former employee of Piikani Resource Development Ltd. Both residents of Pincher Creek now face one count each of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.

Additional Charge for Officer

Constable Grant Shade, who has been an RCMP officer since 2021, faces an additional charge of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. In accordance with standard procedure, Shade has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the judicial process.

Upcoming Court Appearance

Grant and Katrina Shade are scheduled to make their first court appearance on February 18. The proceedings will take place at the provincial court in Fort Macleod.

The case highlights the legal accountability expected of law enforcement officials and underscores the RCMP's internal processes for addressing alleged misconduct within its ranks.
