Teen Driver Charged After Speeding at 202 km/h with Passengers in Trunk
A 17-year-old driver from Welland has been charged with multiple offences after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) recorded the vehicle traveling at a staggering 202 km/h on Highway 406 northbound at Highway 20. The incident occurred on Sunday night around 8:20 p.m., with the driver nearly doubling the posted speed limit of 110 km/h.
Shocking Discovery in the Trunk
Upon stopping the vehicle, police initially noted four passengers inside. However, a further inspection revealed an additional two passengers concealed in the trunk as the car was being prepared for towing. This dangerous situation highlights severe safety violations and reckless behavior.
The driver, who holds a G2 license, faces a series of charges including:
- Stunt driving – excessive speed
- Careless driving
- Novice driver – passenger violation
- Failure to surrender permit
- Failure to have an insurance card
Police have not disclosed the gender of the driver or passengers involved in this alarming case.
Vehicle Impounded and License Suspended
The vehicle, which belongs to the driver's father, was immediately towed and impounded for 14 days. Additionally, the driver's license has been suspended for 30 days as part of the enforcement actions taken by the OPP Highway Safety Division.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with excessive speeding and improper passenger transportation, particularly among novice drivers who must adhere to strict regulations.
