Toronto MP Demands Action Against Anti-Jewish Hate After Synagogue Shootings
In a forceful letter to Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, York Centre MP Roman Baber has demanded concrete measures to combat the surge of anti-Jewish hatred in Toronto, following a series of alarming incidents, including synagogue shootings. Baber criticized the government for what he called empty platitudes and urged immediate action to protect Canada's Jewish communities.
Call for Ministerial Directives and Investigations
Baber's letter outlines three key demands aimed at enhancing security and enforcement. First, he called for the issuance of ministerial directives to the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) to investigate recent anti-Jewish attacks in Toronto. He emphasized that mere statements condemning hate are insufficient without tangible steps.
"I submit that it's enough with the platitudes," Baber wrote. "Of course, 'hate has no place in Canada,' but while your Liberal government continues to say it will defend the Jewish community, it fails to act."
Targeting Foreign Connections and Hate Speech
Additionally, Baber urged Anandasangaree to take action against individuals with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iranian regime officials who may be using Canada as a safe haven. He requested that the RCMP investigate approximately 450 individuals suspected of connections to Palestinian terrorist groups.
Furthermore, Baber asked the minister to dispatch letters to provincial and territorial attorneys and solicitors general, demanding stricter enforcement of existing Criminal Code offences related to hate speech. He argued that chants like "intifada" and protests in residential neighborhoods constitute incitement to violence and intimidation.
Background of Recent Attacks and Protests
The demands come in the wake of a troubling escalation in anti-Jewish incidents in Toronto. Recent military operations against Iran's regime have reignited tensions, leading to a trio of synagogue shootings in early March 2026. On March 2, shots were fired at Temple Emanu-El in North York, followed by attacks at Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) in Vaughan on March 6 and Shaarei Shomayim Congregation in Toronto on March 7.
Since the October 7, 2023, terror attacks by Palestinian terrorists, Toronto has seen hundreds of loud anti-Israel protests, including marches through Jewish neighborhoods. These events have involved harassment of residents and displays of flags and signs, exacerbating community fears.
Community Response and Broader Implications
Baber highlighted the urgent need for action, stating, "The real threat of violence to Canada's Jewish community has reached astronomical proportions." He expressed frustration with what he perceives as inadequate government response, offering specific steps to mitigate risks.
This call to action underscores broader concerns about hate crimes and national security in Canada, as advocacy groups like B'nai Brith Canada have also urged for measures such as a royal commission to address antisemitism. The situation reflects ongoing challenges in balancing free speech with public safety in a diverse urban setting.
