Calgary Police Charge Two Men in Beltline Restaurant Cash Register Thefts
Calgary police have laid charges against two men in connection with a series of break-ins and thefts targeting restaurants in the Beltline area. The incidents involved the theft of cash registers from four establishments on or near 17th Avenue SW during operating hours on the evening of February 18.
Details of the Incidents
The suspects are accused of entering four restaurants and stealing cash registers before fleeing in a stolen white 2003 GMC Sierra. The targeted businesses were Boyd’s Lobster Shop, One Love Caribbean Restaurant, Oakberry Acai Bowls and Smoothies, and Villages Pizza. All these establishments are located on or near the busy 17th Avenue corridor, a popular dining and entertainment district in Calgary.
Multiple departments within the Calgary Police Service confirmed that the same suspects are believed to be responsible for the thefts and break-and-enters. The investigation involved coordination across various units to identify and apprehend the individuals involved.
Arrest and Charges
Later on the evening of February 18, police located and arrested the suspects at a residence in south Calgary. Officers also executed a search warrant at a location in the 1700 block of 26th Avenue SW, where they seized evidence that is expected to assist in the ongoing investigation.
As a result, Michael Christopher Begg, 36, and Matthew James Kelly, 43, have been charged. Both men face one count each of robbery and possession of stolen property, as well as three counts of theft under $5,000. Additionally, Kelly was charged with five counts of breaching a release order and four counts of breaching a probation order.
Court Appearances
Begg is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, February 26, while Kelly will attend a hearing on March 9. The charges reflect the seriousness of the offenses, which disrupted local businesses and raised concerns about safety in the Beltline community.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Calgary police to address property crimes in the city.
