Woman Dies Following Violent Incident in Montérégie Residence

A 40-year-old woman has died from injuries sustained during an altercation in Rougemont, a town in Quebec's Montérégie region. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) confirmed the death late Sunday, January 18, 2026, after the victim was transported to hospital with critical injuries.

Police Discover Fire at Scene, Residents Evacuated

SQ officers were called to a multi-unit dwelling on Petite-Caroline Street at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they found the woman gravely injured. Police also discovered that a fire had broken out at the location of the confrontation. The blaze forced the evacuation of other residents living in the building as emergency crews responded to the dual incidents.

At the scene, police also located a man in his 40s. His condition was described by authorities as serious but not life-threatening. He was transported for medical treatment.

Suspect's Questioning Pending Medical Clearance

SQ spokesperson Louis-Philippe Ruel stated that investigators have deemed the man a suspect in connection with the woman's death. Police intend to question him as soon as his health permits. Ruel indicated that investigators hope to conduct this interrogation on Monday, January 19.

The SQ's major crimes unit is leading the investigation into the events that led to the woman's fatal injuries and the subsequent fire. The sequence of events and the relationship between the individuals involved remain under investigation.

The incident has shaken the small community of Rougemont, located about 50 kilometers east of Montreal. The SQ is appealing to anyone with information about the altercation to come forward.
