Calgary's Critical Water Main Repair Nears Completion with Restrictions Set to Ease

City crews in Calgary are making significant progress on the final phases of the Bearspaw South feeder main repair project, with water restrictions potentially lifting as early as Thursday if all proceeds according to plan. The extensive reinforcement work has improved stability in nine of the most deteriorated segments of this crucial water infrastructure, yet officials caution that the feeder main remains in poor overall condition and vulnerable to additional breaks.

Refilling and Testing Phase Underway

The City of Calgary confirmed in its Monday update that refilling of the massive pipe was successfully completed on Sunday afternoon. Water sampling and rigorous testing are now actively underway to verify that the water meets or exceeds all regulatory safety standards. This comprehensive testing will continue throughout Monday to ensure the complete safety of Calgary's drinking water supply for all residents.

When test results confirm the water is safe for consumption, crews are scheduled to begin opening valves and activating pumps at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant by Tuesday morning. During this critical transition period, residents across the system may notice temporary cloudiness in their water, but city officials assure Calgarians this will be a brief occurrence and the water will remain entirely safe to drink.

Persistent Risks and Safety Precautions

Despite the reinforcement work that has strengthened nine particularly vulnerable segments, the city has emphasized that the feeder main continues to exist in poor condition overall and remains at genuine risk of another catastrophic break. This risk notably increases during pressure changes, including the pumped activation and water flow increase planned for Tuesday's operations.

Out of an abundance of caution, multiple safety measures have been implemented. These include the removal of two segments from the flood barrier along Montgomery Boulevard N.W., strategically positioned to allow any potential water from a break to flow directly toward the river rather than flooding residential areas. Additionally, temporary barriers have been installed near the Bow River pathway by Parkdale Boulevard N.W. to provide further protection.

Water Conservation Success and Future Planning

Calgary's collective water-saving efforts have proven remarkably effective, keeping the city within the "green zone" on Sunday with usage recorded at the threshold of 500 million litres. This total included the approximately 12 million litres required to refill the massive feeder main pipe itself.

A comprehensive pipe diver inspection is scheduled between April 9 and 11, where a specialized mechanical tool will be placed inside the pipe to travel through its entire length for detailed assessment. City crews plan to briefly remove this inspection device upon completion, conducting additional tests before restarting the pumps fully.

If all operations proceed smoothly without complications, the city anticipates that no additional water restrictions will be necessary until fall, when planned maintenance requires shutting down the pipe to connect new infrastructure to the water system. However, the risk of another break will persist until the new pipe becomes fully operational.

Long-Term Water Management Strategies

Calgarians are being encouraged to plan ahead for spring and summer by considering practical water conservation measures such as installing rain barrels for garden and yard use. The city's rain barrel rebate program opens on Wednesday, offering a $50 rebate for eligible purchases to promote sustainable water practices among residents.

While the immediate repair work nears completion, officials continue to urge Calgarians to maintain water-saving actions as crews finalize the remaining stages of this critical infrastructure project. The city emphasizes that responsible water use remains essential for community resilience and infrastructure longevity.
