A 54-year-old man died after falling from an escalator at Empress Walk Plaza in North York on Thursday, prompting an investigation by Toronto Police and the Ministry of Labour. The incident occurred around 5:03 p.m. at Yonge Street and Empress Avenue, north of Sheppard Avenue. The man was pronounced dead at the scene; his name has not been released. The plaza was evacuated and closed following the incident.
RioCan, the property owner, issued a statement expressing deep sadness and extending condolences to the victim's family. The company said it has fully cooperated with the investigation and deferred further questions to Toronto Police.
Two Hamilton women charged in parking lot assault
Hamilton Police have charged two women, aged 22 and 26, with assault causing bodily harm after an alleged attack in a parking lot on Sunday night. Officers responded to reports of an assault at Upper Wellington Street and Concession Street around 9:35 p.m. Police allege a verbal dispute over a parking issue escalated into a physical assault, during which the female victim was punched, pulled to the ground, and dragged by her hair while the assailants uttered racial slurs. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and declined hospital transport. The suspects fled in a white Lexus SUV before police arrived but were later identified and arrested on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
Pedestrian seriously injured in Hamilton collision
A 54-year-old pedestrian suffered serious, life-altering injuries after being struck by an SUV at a bus shelter in Hamilton on Thursday afternoon. Police say a Ford Edge SUV exited the Tim Hortons Plaza onto King Street East, traveled west, and lost control, hitting the victim who was waiting for a bus near Dundurn Street North just after 4:30 p.m. The man was taken to hospital; the female driver was uninjured. 13-year-old boy struck by vehicle in Ajax
A 13-year-old boy riding a scooter was hit by a vehicle in Ajax on Thursday evening. Durham Regional Police responded to the collision at Harwood Avenue North and Rossland Road West around 6:30 p.m. The boy was crossing the intersection westbound when a southbound vehicle struck him. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with police. Motorcyclist killed in Ajax crash
A 34-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision in Ajax on Thursday afternoon. Police say a grey/silver Honda motorcycle was traveling south on Harwood Avenue North approaching Kerrison Drive East when a northbound black Chevrolet Malibu allegedly turned left into its path around 3:45 p.m. Witnesses reported the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later pronounced dead. The driver of the Malibu remained on scene and is cooperating. No other injuries were reported. Moped rider seriously injured in Vaughan
A 58-year-old man from Brampton suffered serious, life-threatening injuries after a collision involving a moped and an SUV in Vaughan on Thursday. York Regional Police responded to the intersection of Rutherford Road and Islington Avenue around 5:30 p.m. The moped rider was transported to hospital; the SUV driver remained at the scene.
