The City of Montreal has reversed its decision to install parking meters on Sherbrooke Street in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) neighborhood, following public backlash. The plan, initially announced to manage parking demand and generate revenue, was met with strong opposition from local residents and business owners.
Background of the Decision
Earlier this month, the city announced that parking meters would be installed along Sherbrooke Street to address congestion and encourage turnover. However, after consultations and feedback, city officials decided to backtrack on the plan for this specific area.
Mayor Valerie Plante stated that the decision was made after listening to community concerns. "We understand that parking is a sensitive issue, and we want to work with residents to find solutions that meet everyone's needs," she said.
Community Reaction
Local business owners had expressed fears that paid parking would deter customers. "Many of our clients come from outside the neighborhood, and adding meters could push them away," said one shop owner. Residents also worried about the added cost and inconvenience.
The city has not ruled out installing meters in other parts of NDG or elsewhere in Montreal. A comprehensive parking study is underway to assess future needs.
