Megyn Kelly loudly celebrated the Supreme Court ruling Thursday allowing President Donald Trump and his MAGA administration to strip nearly 400,000 Haitians and Syrians lawfully living in the U.S. of their temporary protected status, and she didn’t hold back on the racism.
Kelly's Remarks on TPS
“TPS designations are supposed to be for specific periods of time, hence the word ‘temporary,’” Kelly said Thursday on her SiriusXM show. “But under the law, the designation can be extended before the designation expires, before the terms expire.” She continued, “The Obama admin granting Haitians TPS in 2010 due to the country’s devastating earthquake, Syrians receiving it in 2012 because of the country’s civil war, I mean, cry me a river. We have our own problems.”
TPS was developed by Congress in 1990 and aims to help people who can’t stay in their home country due to armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters or other dire conditions. Syria and Haiti received TPS under the administration of former President Barack Obama.
Kelly's Call for Deportation
“TPS from both countries [were] extended multiple times,” Kelly said Thursday. “And look, this has been going on for over a dozen years. Go home! Get out. We know our country is better than yours. That’s because we filled it with our work ethic and our culture and our values.” The former Fox News host continued, “You being here only dilutes it for us, those who built it and live it. And half of you people — more than half of you — won’t assimilate. We don’t want you! We don’t care if you’re offended. Get out! Go home! Go back to fucking Haiti!”
Supreme Court Ruling
The Supreme Court heard arguments in April on whether then-Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem followed the law when terminating temporary protected status for Syria and Haiti in September and November, respectively, and ruled 6-3 Thursday in her favor. The court includes six conservative justices, three of whom were appointed by Trump.
“Sorry,” said Kelly for cursing. “I’m just thinking about our friends in Ohio who’ve been dealing with these TPS Haitians for years now who are drunk driving all over their towns and killing people. This is the whole cats and dogs thing, like, they don’t want to live like Americans.”
Baseless Claims and Dissent
While she has broken with Trump over his war on Iran and genocidal rhetoric, Kelly is quite clearly still a staunch conservative — and had repeated Trump’s baseless claim from last year that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were “eating the dogs” and cats there. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan notably decried that comment in her written dissent on Thursday’s ruling and slammed the MAGA leader’s other racist claims that Haitians living in the U.S. “probably have AIDS” and come from a “shithole” country.
The Obama-appointed justice added that the Haitians and Syrians stripped of TPS “ask for only one thing: that they may stay in this country while they continue to litigate their claims,” are “entitled to that relief” — and shouldn’t be forced to endure “life-threatening” changes.
