Calgary's weekend was bustling with community events, from the BUMP Road Works patio art project to the launch of a year-round skating rink in Forest Lawn. Our photographers were on the scene to capture the action.
Friday: Skating Rink and Asian Heritage Month
On Friday, May 1, 2026, preparations began for a year-round skating rink on 32nd Street S.E. in Forest Lawn. The rarely used street will be transformed with synthetic ice and a large social area as part of an International Avenue revitalization project. Matt Price and Kaylynn Miller were seen preparing overhead decorations, while Alison Karim-McSwiney, Executive Director of the International Avenue BRZ, unloaded props. Wooden framework was set up for the synthetic skating pad.
Meanwhile, Asian Heritage Month kicked off in Chinatown with musical performances. Lemon Wang played the Erhu (Chinese violin), and Harshita Chokkalingam played the Bansuri at the event.
Saturday: Patio Art, Book Sale, and Bike Swap
On Saturday, May 2, the BUMP Road Works project continued, bringing beauty and creativity to seasonal patios. Artists Sylvia Arthur and Aly Tucker worked on painting jersey barriers, joined by youth artist Elizabeth Tremblett. The project, started in 2021 in cooperation with the City of Calgary parks and roads departments, aims to enhance the city's patios.
Book lovers flocked to the Calgary Book Sale at Crossroads Market, supporting the Reset Society of Calgary. The sale featured a wide selection, including books over 100 years old.
The annual Calgary Bike Swap took place at Vivo in Country Hills. Volunteers like Joe Frantz tuned bikes to ensure they were in good working order, and all bikes were checked to confirm they were not stolen.
Sunday: Cricket Spring Training
On Sunday, May 3, warm weather brought cricket players to Riley Park for spring training. Players took advantage of the conditions to practice and prepare for the upcoming season.
