SHELBY, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina police officer who was captured on a doorbell camera repeatedly punching a woman in the face has been charged with assault. The incident involving Shelby Officer Karson Hyder and Cherrie Moore occurred on Friday, and the video has since spread widely on social media.
Officer Surrenders and Released on Bond
Hyder, 22, turned himself in at the Cleveland County Detention Center on Monday morning and was subsequently released after posting a $10,000 secured bond. Court records do not list an attorney for him, and a phone number associated with his name was out of service. The officer, who has been suspended, was responding to a breaking-and-entering call when the altercation took place.
Details from Warrants
According to a warrant, Moore, 34, fled the residence on foot and resisted arrest, assaulting Hyder by grabbing and ripping his uniform. However, a separate warrant filed Monday alleged that Hyder unlawfully and willfully assaulted and struck Moore by grabbing her arm, pushing her to the ground, and striking her in the face with a closed fist, thereby inflicting serious injury, including a possible broken nose and busted lip.
Investigation and Charges
The State Bureau of Investigation announced on Saturday that it had opened an investigation into Hyder. Moore was initially charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a public officer, but the latter two charges have since been dismissed. She was freed on an unsecured bond. Her attorney did not respond to a phone message seeking comment, and a phone number associated with Moore was disconnected.
