Ontario Provincial Police charged two drivers with stunt driving in separate incidents that occurred within one hour of each other on Highway 17 near North Bay. The charges were laid on June 23, 2026, according to an OPP news release.
Details of the incidents
The first incident involved a 23-year-old driver who was stopped by police after being clocked at 152 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. The second incident, less than an hour later, involved a 25-year-old driver travelling at 148 km/h in the same 90 km/h zone. Both drivers were stopped by OPP officers patrolling Highway 17.
As a result, both individuals were charged with stunt driving under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. Their vehicles were impounded for 14 days, and their driver's licences were suspended for 30 days, as per provincial legislation.
Impact and penalties
Stunt driving carries severe penalties in Ontario, including fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, possible jail time of up to six months, and a licence suspension of up to two years upon conviction. The OPP reminded the public that excessive speed is a leading cause of serious collisions on Ontario highways.
“Speeding and aggressive driving put everyone at risk,” said OPP in a statement. “We encourage all drivers to obey speed limits and drive responsibly.”
