Survey Reveals Overwhelming Support for Regime Change Among Iranian Canadians

A recent community survey has uncovered overwhelming support among Iranian Canadians for regime change in Iran, with nine in ten respondents expressing strong or somewhat support for this political shift. The findings highlight a significant consensus within the diaspora community regarding the future of their homeland.

Survey Methodology and Key Findings

The survey was conducted by the Metropolis Institute, a division of the Association for Canadian Studies, on behalf of the non-profit Advancement of Human Rights Organization for the Middle East (AHROME). Between March 29 and April 13, 2026, researchers distributed 1,768 surveys at large Iranian community gatherings in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, with 1,166 fully completed responses.

The results revealed striking levels of opposition to the current Iranian government:

  • 92.3% expressed a very unfavorable opinion of the current Iranian government
  • 98.4% agreed that the regime mostly does not or does not represent the will of the Iranian people
  • 95.9% expressed a desire for at least normal diplomatic relations with Israel in the future

Support for International Military Actions

The survey also found substantial backing for international military campaigns against Iran. An overwhelming 90.2% of Iranian Canadians strongly or somewhat approve of international military actions against the Iranian government, while 89.4% believe such actions contribute at least somewhat to political change in Iran.

Kevin Rod, president of AHROME and a practicing physician within the Iranian Canadian community, noted that the findings were expected. "Knowing our diaspora community, I was not surprised by any of the responses," Rod stated in a written statement to National Post.

Call for Canadian Government Action

Rod emphasized the importance of the Canadian government listening to Iranian Canadian voices when formulating responses to the ongoing conflict. "Given the large Iranian diaspora in Canada and Canada's history of supporting human rights around the world, the Canadian government is well placed to lead the way in raising awareness and supporting the people of Iran in their struggle to change this regime," he said.

According to Statistics Canada data from 2021, there are approximately 200,000 Iranian Canadians in the country, with an additional 80,000 identifying as "Persian," making them the largest ethnic group from Iran in Canada.

Community Attachment to Canada

Despite their strong opinions about Iran's political future, most survey respondents indicated strong connections to Canada. The majority reported being "very or somewhat attached to Canada," with 84.2% affirming they have a long-term future in the country.

The Iranian Canadian community has grown significantly since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which saw the overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the rise of Islamic cleric Ruhollah Khomeini. Before 1980, Statistics Canada records show just over 2,000 people born in Iran had immigrated to Canada.

This survey provides crucial insights into the political perspectives of one of Canada's most significant diaspora communities, revealing near-unanimous support for fundamental changes in Iran's government and international relations.
