Rules of the Road
Re “Biker’s takedown good policing – or cops going too far?” (Joe Warmington, June 3): I have been a cyclist for over 70 years, starting in Britain. In Britain, I was taught that a bicycle is a vehicle, and as a vehicle it deserves all the rights of the road but must also follow the rules of the road. I did not hear “bikes don’t belong on the road” or “get on the sidewalk where you belong” until I came to Canada. The central problem is that the police do not enforce the rules of the road on cyclists, so cyclists appear to operate outside the law yet interfere with traffic. The takedown of a cyclist who broke the law and refused to stop is a sign that the police are finally doing their job and making the roads safer for all. It may be a bit heavy-handed, but what are the alternatives? I think it is a job well done. Train cyclists before they learn to ride, train drivers as part of their licensing, and enforce the rules of the road on all traffic.

(This is an excellent point about the perception of bicyclists on the roadways. A bicycle is a vehicle. But far too often, it is the cyclists who are not following the rules. It is about time the rules of the road are enforced for those on two wheels.)
51st State … Groan
Re “U.S. envoy stands by Trump’s latest taunt” (Philip Authier, June 4): Enough is enough. This Trump puppet Peter Hoekstra should be expelled from the country. His continued rhetoric about Canada becoming the 51st state is starting to wear thin. Time to leave, Peter.
S. Naccarato, Newcastle
(It is not worth taking it too seriously.)
