IGNORING THE RULES OF THE ROAD

Re “Was Toronto cyclist takedown good policing or police going too far?” (Joe Warmington, June 2): Put simply, people tend to fall into two camps on this issue. If you ask drivers or even pedestrians who’ve had close calls with cyclists running red lights, many would say the police action was justified, maybe even overdue. Others might still agree, though with less enthusiasm. What’s important to remember is that when the police tell you to stop, you stop. The fact that the cyclist wasn’t charged with resisting arrest or obstruction is actually a positive outcome. Across Canada, respect for traffic rules has been steadily declining. I’ve watched this erosion happen over decades on the road. Given that this incident didn’t result in a criminal charge, people should see it as a reasonable response from the police. Their patience with non‑compliance is wearing thin, especially considering the broader climate in the country after years of more lenient policies.

(Good point. For too long, reckless cyclists have not been held accountable. It’s high time that happened)

BIRTH OF A NATION

Canada Day is approaching fast and I wonder what kind of celebration we Canadians are going to have? With the Alberta issue and Quebec issue, pending uncertainties rule, whereas U.S. President Donald Trump wants to celebrate that country’s 250th birthday and make it the best ever and one for the books, and he is sincere and honest. It leaves us to wonder what kind of Canada Day celebration we are going to have from coast to coast. Any comments from anyone or our prime minister?
