Angels DFA Jordan Romano After Rough Start to 2026 Season

The Los Angeles Angels have designated former Toronto Blue Jays all-star closer Jordan Romano for assignment, effectively ending his brief tenure with the franchise just one month into the 2026 season. The move comes after a turbulent start that saw the Markham, Ontario native struggle with consistency on the mound.

A Promising Start Turns Sour

Romano began the season as the Angels' closer, showcasing his talent with four saves in six scoreless appearances over five total innings. However, his performance took a sharp downturn when he blew two consecutive save opportunities against the New York Yankees, surrendering five runs while recording just one out across two games. Although he managed two scoreless outings in low-leverage situations, his struggles resurfaced in his final appearance.

Final Outing Seals His Fate

In a 12-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, Romano allowed four runs on three hits in the eighth inning, cementing his exit. His season stats now stand at a 0-2 record with a 10.13 ERA.

Under MLB rules, the Angels have seven days to trade, release, or place Romano on waivers. As a veteran, if he clears waivers, he can choose to become a free agent rather than accept a minor league assignment.

Roster Moves in Anaheim

Alongside Romano's designation, the Angels also DFA'd pitcher Shaun Anderson and placed catcher Logan O'Hoppe on the 10-day injured list with a fractured wrist. The team called up pitchers Jose Fermin and Joey Lucchesi, along with catcher Sebastian Rivero.

Romano's Time with the Blue Jays

Romano was a hometown hero during his tenure with the Blue Jays. Drafted in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB draft, he made his MLB debut in 2019 but became a key bullpen piece in 2021. He represented Toronto at the All-Star Game in 2022 and 2023 before struggling in 2024. The Blue Jays did not re-sign him, and he joined the Philadelphia Phillies for 2025, where he posted an 8.23 ERA in 49 games.

Over his eight-year career, Romano holds a 22-23 record with 117 saves and a 3.92 ERA. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has struck out 344 batters in 280.1 innings pitched.
