The Toronto Blue Jays were swept by the Texas Rangers in a three-game series at Rogers Centre, falling 4-2 on Thursday afternoon. The loss extended Toronto's losing streak to five games and dropped them to 38-42 on the season, nine games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East.
Guerrero Jr. Continues Slump
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, including a memorable moment in the first inning when he lost his grip on the bat during a swing, sending it flying toward Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka. The incident highlighted the frustration for the Blue Jays' star, who is hitting just .232 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs this season.
According to MLB statistics, Guerrero's batting average is the lowest of his career since his rookie season in 2019. The 27-year-old first baseman has struggled to find consistency at the plate, striking out 78 times in 80 games.
Rangers' Pitching Dominates
Texas starting pitcher Jon Gray (6-5) held the Blue Jays to two runs on five hits over six innings, striking out seven. The Rangers' bullpen combined for three scoreless innings, with José Leclerc earning his 15th save of the season.
"Their pitching staff did a great job of keeping us off balance," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. "We had some opportunities but couldn't get the big hit when we needed it."
Offensive Woes Continue
The Blue Jays managed only five hits in the game, with George Springer hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning and Daulton Varsho adding an RBI double in the sixth. Toronto left seven runners on base and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Over the three-game series, the Blue Jays scored a total of six runs while batting .198 as a team. The sweep marked the fourth time this season Toronto has been swept in a series.
Playoff Hopes Fading
With the loss, the Blue Jays fell to fourth place in the AL East, trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by 3.5 games for the third wild-card spot. FanGraphs now gives Toronto a 12.4% chance of making the postseason.
"We're in a tough stretch right now, but nobody in this room is giving up," said Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk. "We have to keep working and find a way to turn this around."
Upcoming Schedule
The Blue Jays will travel to Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox starting Friday. Right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-5, 3.89 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener for Toronto.
The Rangers improved to 44-36 with the win and remain in contention for an AL wild-card spot. They will host the Baltimore Orioles for a four-game series beginning Friday.
