The Calgary Flames selected defenceman Carson Carels with the sixth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft on Friday, adding a highly regarded left-shot blueliner to an already deep prospect pipeline.
Draft Day Decision
Carels, a 6-foot-2, 194-pound defenceman from the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League, was widely considered one of the top two-way defencemen available in this year's draft. In 58 games last season, he recorded 20 goals and 53 assists for 73 points, showcasing his offensive ability while maintaining a strong defensive game with a physical edge.
The Flames' front office, led by general manager Craig Conroy, opted to bolster their blue line despite already possessing a strong group of young defencemen, including Zayne Parekh, Hunter Brzustewicz, and Simon Nemec. However, all of those prospects are right-handed shots, making Carels' left-handedness a key factor in the selection.
A Family Affair
Carels did not attend the draft in person, instead watching the proceedings from his family cattle farm in Cypress River, Manitoba. He was the Flames' highest pick since they selected Matthew Tkachuk sixth overall in 2016. Flames legend Lanny McDonald announced the pick from the podium at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Carels is committed to the University of North Dakota for the upcoming season, where he will join fellow Flames prospect Cole Reschny, a first-round pick from the previous year.
Filling a Need
The addition of Carels addresses a positional need for the Flames, who have a surplus of right-shot defencemen in their system. His two-way skill set and physical play are expected to translate well to the professional level. According to scouting reports, Carels is a smooth skater with excellent hockey IQ and a heavy shot from the point.
With the sixth overall pick, the Flames secured a player who many analysts projected to be a top-four NHL defenceman. The pick was met with approval from Flames fans and analysts alike, who noted the team's continued commitment to building through the draft.
