The Toronto Maple Leafs have made significant additions to their front office, announcing the hiring of Judd Brackett as assistant general manager of player evaluation and Freddie Hamilton as chief of staff. The moves come as the team continues to reshape its hockey operations department under general manager John Chayka.
Judd Brackett Brings Extensive Scouting Experience
Brackett, 49, a Massachusetts native, will oversee player evaluation across both amateur and professional scouting. He brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as director of amateur scouting for the Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks. In addition, he has worked the past three world junior championships as a scout for USA Hockey, further solidifying his reputation as one of the NHL's top talent evaluators.
Chayka praised Brackett's track record, stating, "He has established one of the strongest amateur scouting and drafting track records in the NHL and has demonstrated an ability to adapt and evolve his approach as the game changes." Chayka also emphasized that Brackett will play a key role in integrating traditional scouting, video analysis, and data-driven insights to strengthen the team's decision-making process.
Freddie Hamilton Returns to Hockey Operations
Hamilton, 34, a Toronto native, will support strategic planning and cross-functional initiatives across the hockey operations department while working closely with the club's leadership group. His NHL playing career spanned 75 games, concluding in 2017-18 with the Arizona Coyotes, where Chayka was then general manager. Since retiring, Hamilton earned his MBA from Yale University and worked in private equity, providing a unique blend of on-ice experience and business acumen.
"We are excited to add Freddie to our hockey operations department," said Chayka. "Throughout his playing career, Freddie distinguished himself through his character, professionalism, and work ethic. His diverse background and collaborative approach will make him a valuable addition as we execute key strategic initiatives and strengthen alignment across our hockey operations department." Hamilton is the older brother of New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton.
Front Office Changes Follow Recent Departures
The new hires come two weeks after the Leafs announced that assistant general manager Brandon Pridham and assistant GM of player personnel Derek Clancey are leaving the organization. These changes signal a continued restructuring under Chayka, who is building a front office that blends traditional scouting with modern analytics.
With Brackett's proven eye for talent and Hamilton's strategic mindset, the Maple Leafs are positioning themselves to make more informed decisions in player evaluation and organizational planning. The team looks to build on its recent successes and address areas of improvement as it prepares for the upcoming season.
