Baseball fans at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago were left in shock on Wednesday evening as a frightening incident unfolded during pregame ceremonies. Gerald Chaney, the longtime anthem singer for the Chicago White Sox, experienced a sudden medical emergency while performing, collapsing to the field mid-song and prompting immediate emergency response.
A Terrifying Moment on the Field
The scene occurred before the scheduled matchup between the White Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. Chaney had just begun singing "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often referred to as the Black national anthem in the United States, as part of the league-wide commemoration of Jackie Robinson Day. This annual event honors the anniversary of Jackie Robinson's historic Major League Baseball debut, breaking the color barrier in 1947.
According to eyewitness reports and team statements, Chaney stopped after uttering only a few words, briefly collected himself, and attempted to resume singing. However, he was unable to continue and collapsed near second base, sending a wave of concern through the stadium.
Emergency Response and Team Support
Emergency medical technicians rushed to the field, attending to Chaney for several minutes while players from both teams watched in silent apprehension from their dugouts. He was eventually placed on a stretcher and transported off the field to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Later that night, the Chicago White Sox organization issued a statement on social media platform X, providing an update on Chaney's condition. The team confirmed that he was alert prior to being taken to the hospital and expressed heartfelt support for his recovery.
"The White Sox longtime anthem performer, Gerald Chaney, experienced a medical emergency while singing during pregame tonight. He received treatment by EMTs at the ballpark and was alert prior to being transported to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment," the statement read. "The entire White Sox family is sending love to Gerald and his family for a full and speedy recovery."
It remains unclear when or if Chaney will be able to return to his anthem-singing duties, leaving fans and the team hopeful for positive news in the coming days.
Game Delay and Outcome
The distressing incident resulted in a 12-minute delay to the start of the game. Once play resumed, the Tampa Bay Rays secured an 8-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. With this win, the Rays improved their record to 10-7, positioning them at the top of the American League East division. Conversely, the White Sox fell to 6-12, tying them for the worst record in Major League Baseball at that point in the season.
This event cast a somber shadow over what was meant to be a celebratory day honoring Jackie Robinson's legacy, reminding everyone of the unpredictability of health and the importance of community support in times of crisis.
