Toronto Raptors extend head coach Darko Rajakovic amid Kawhi Leonard return
Raptors extend coach Rajakovic as Kawhi Leonard returns

The Toronto Raptors announced Thursday that head coach Darko Rajakovic has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, a move widely anticipated after a strong third season that saw the team post a 46-36 record and secure the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. The extension comes just days before the expected finalization of Kawhi Leonard's blockbuster return from the Los Angeles Clippers on July 6.

Rajakovic's tenure and team progress

Rajakovic took over as head coach in 2023, replacing Nick Nurse during a period of significant roster upheaval. The Raptors had just lost Fred VanVleet, and soon after traded Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, handing the reins to Scottie Barnes. Despite a challenging first two seasons—25-57 and 30-52 records—Rajakovic focused on player development, building strong relationships with Barnes and helping young players like Ja'Kobe Walter, Jamal Shead, and Collin Murray-Boyles make substantial progress.

General manager and executive vice-president Bobby Webster, who also recently received an extension, praised Rajakovic's impact. “Darko’s strong development philosophy and commitment to a team-first culture shine through on a daily basis,” Webster said in a release. “We’ve seen these qualities play out on the court – our team plays hard, plays together, and fights until the end. Darko knows there’s more to be done, and we’re looking forward to seeing the continued growth of this team.”

Key season and playoff performance

This past season, expectations rose with Brandon Ingram healthy and Barnes emerging as a top NBA player. The Raptors started strong at 29-19, weathered a late-season slump, and pushed the favored Cleveland Cavaliers to a seven-game first-round series. Despite missing starting point guard Immanuel Quickley and Ingram being hampered by a heel injury, Toronto competed fiercely before Cleveland pulled away in the second half of Game 7. Rajakovic made strong in-game adjustments under pressure.

Rajakovic acknowledged the work ahead. “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, but our team knows there is still a lot of work to do, and I am looking forward to continuing to build and win with the Raptors,” he said in the release. “We will keep growing, keep working together and stay committed to getting better every day as we reach for our goal of an NBA Championship. I’m grateful to Bobby, to MLSE and the board of directors, to my coaching staff and especially to the players.”

Impact of Kawhi Leonard's return

The extension gains added significance with Leonard's imminent return. The Raptors sent Ingram, draft picks, and Gradey Dick—who regressed under Rajakovic after initial progress—to the Clippers for Leonard. The move dramatically raises expectations for a team that already showed playoff potential. Rajakovic will need to continue his development-focused approach while integrating Leonard into a lineup that includes Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Sandro Mamukelashvili, both of whom have improved under his tutelage.

Rajakovic's first NBA head coaching stint was no sure thing, given his previous experience only as a head coach in Europe and the NBA G League. However, his communication skills and ability to develop young talent have proven vital as the franchise navigated massive changes. With Leonard back, the Raptors aim to contend for an NBA championship, and Rajakovic's extension signals long-term commitment to his leadership.
