The Calgary Stampeders spoiled the B.C. Lions' homecoming party at Kelowna's Apple Bowl on Saturday, handing the winless Lions a 41-33 defeat in front of a record crowd of 12,347 fans.
Stampeders dominate early
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Stampeders to their third win of the season. Calgary opened the scoring with a 75-yard touchdown drive on their first possession, capped by a 12-yard pass from Adams to receiver Luther Hakunavanhu.
The Stampeders built a 24-10 halftime lead, with Adams connecting on touchdown passes of 45 yards to Colton Hunchak and 8 yards to Richard Sindani. Running back Ka'Deem Carey added a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Lions attempt comeback
The Lions, still seeking their first win of the season, mounted a comeback in the second half. Quarterback Nathan Rourke threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard strike to Lucky Whitehead and a 12-yard pass to Bryan Burnham. Running back James Butler added a 6-yard touchdown run.
Rourke also rushed for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the Stampeders' lead to 38-33 with 4:23 remaining. But Calgary responded with a 35-yard field goal by kicker Rene Paredes to seal the victory.
Key plays and statistics
Stampeders defensive back Tre Roberson intercepted Rourke in the end zone late in the third quarter, thwarting a potential go-ahead drive. Calgary's defense also sacked Rourke four times, with defensive end James Vaughters recording two sacks.
Adams completed 23 of 31 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions. Carey rushed for 87 yards on 18 carries. For the Lions, Rourke completed 27 of 40 passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
"We knew they'd come out fighting, especially in front of their home fans," said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson. "But our guys stayed focused and made the plays when it mattered. Vernon was outstanding, and our defense came up with a huge stop when we needed it."
Lions head coach Rick Campbell acknowledged the loss was disappointing. "We showed a lot of fight in the second half, but we dug ourselves too deep a hole in the first half. We need to start games better and execute consistently for four quarters."
Record crowd at Apple Bowl
The game was the first CFL regular-season contest held at the Apple Bowl since 1980, and the crowd of 12,347 was the largest for a football game at the venue. The Lions moved the game to Kelowna as part of their efforts to engage with fans in the Okanagan region.
The Stampeders improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Lions fell to 0-5. Calgary will host the Edmonton Elks next Friday, while the Lions travel to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday.
