Five games into the WNBA season, the Toronto Tempo are defying expectations typically associated with expansion teams. Their impressive 98-91 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday improved their record to 3-2, showcasing a competitive edge that suggests this team is ahead of schedule.
Early Success and Close Losses
Even the Tempo's two losses were narrow, decided by a combined seven points. The team was built to be competitive immediately rather than tanking for a high draft pick, and that strategy is paying off. Despite being undersized and missing key players like forward Nyara Sabally, backup center Temi Fagbenle, and guard Julie Allemand, Toronto has managed to find early success.
Standout Performances
Guards Marina Mabrey and Brittany Sykes have been exceptional. Sykes is averaging 25.6 points per game, trailing only Los Angeles star Kelsey Plum, and ranks fourth in steals. The 10-year veteran is on pace for a fourth straight all-star selection, with her scoring average nearly 10 points higher than her career best. Mabrey has also been stellar, hitting six three-pointers in a game twice this season and scoring 30 points against Phoenix. She ranks second in three-point makes per game and is getting to the free-throw line frequently.
Rookie Contributions
Rookie Kiki Rice, Toronto's first-ever draft pick, is finding her groove after a scoreless debut. Over the past two games, she has averaged 17 points, six rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting efficiently. Fellow rookies Laura Juskaite and Maria Conde have also played well. Head coach Sandy Brondello has done strong work despite the team not being at full strength.
Comparison to Golden State Valkyries
The Tempo studied last year's expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries, which started 2-3 before setting a WNBA record for wins by an expansion team (23-21) and making the playoffs. Golden State is now valued at $1 billion US, the most valuable WNBA franchise. While the Tempo may not match that success, they look capable of making a mark. Preseason projections had Toronto winning 15.5 games, with under bets popular, but early results suggest that might be an underestimate.
Upcoming Schedule
The Tempo finish their four-game road trip Thursday at Minnesota before returning home to face expansion cousin Portland on Saturday. After that, they play Wednesday in Chicago and a home matinee against Seattle on May 30.
