This week's highlight takes us back to June 4, 1974, when the newly appointed coaching staff of the Saskatoon Hilltops began preparations for the summer training camps. New Leadership Takes the Helm
The Saskatoon Hilltops entered the 1974 season with a fresh coaching lineup, headed by Paul Schoenhals. Joining him were offensive backfield coach Barry Radcliffe, defensive line coach Al Froesse, and offensive coach Al Ledingham. Schoenhals also took on the responsibility of coaching the defensive backs. The quartet faced the challenge of molding a competitive team for the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Junior Football League title.
Promising Rural Camp
The coaching staff conducted a rural camp over the weekend, attracting 36 athletes from across Saskatchewan and as far as Grand Prairie, Alberta. The talent on display exceeded expectations, with 15 players invited back to the main pre-season camp starting July 15. Coach Ledingham remarked, "In our wildest dreams, we were only expecting a dozen would be good enough to invite back."
Among the standout performers was Daryl Hutchinson from Porcupine Plain, who impressed Schoenhals with his skills. The rural camp demonstrated the depth of junior football talent in the region.
Returning Players Join the Mix
Following the rural camp, the coaches moved into a second camp involving returning Hilltops players. This allowed the staff to evaluate both new and veteran talent as they built the roster for the season. The combination of fresh recruits and experienced players gave the coaching staff optimism for a strong campaign.
The Hilltops aimed to harness this talent to become contenders in the league. With a dedicated coaching staff and a promising pool of athletes, the 1974 season held great potential for the Saskatoon junior football team.
