TNT network hockey analyst and former NHL enforcer Paul Bissonnette, known as BizNasty, delivered a scathing critique of the Edmonton Oilers' management following the team's first-round playoff elimination at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers were swept in four games, sparking widespread frustration among fans and pundits alike.
Panel Reaction to Oilers' Demise
The TNT panel, which included Hall of Fame goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and former Oilers winger Anson Carter, initially offered measured takes. Lundqvist noted the Oilers' fatigue after several grueling seasons. 'I did not see them even be close winning this year,' Lundqvist said. 'Maybe this is a good thing for them. Ended it short this year to really regroup. Rest. They played a lot of hockey over the last two three years.'
Carter suggested that Connor McDavid might not finish his two-year contract extension if the team does not improve. 'I'd probably give him a year this year, and then have to decide what to do with Connor McDavid,' Carter said. 'If there isn't drastic improvement this hockey team, I can see them moving Connor McDavid, without a doubt.'
Bissonnette's Explosive Commentary
Bissonnette then unleashed his frustration, accusing management of failing the team's core players. 'I've been kind of beating this drum for the last couple years. I think that management's failed them,' he said. Drawing a comparison to the Colorado Avalanche, he highlighted how that team reloaded during Nathan MacKinnon's prime by addressing goaltending and defense through strategic acquisitions.
'When they needed another puck-moving defenseman, well, they had Sam Malinski coming up, and then they were able to move off Sam Girard to bring a guy like Brett Kulak, who's a shutdown defenseman,' Bissonnette explained. He then listed several players the Oilers had let go, including Ryan McLeod, Philip Broberg, Dylan Holloway, and Connor Brown, who were part of the team's run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2024.
'We can go into a rabbit hole of decisions that were made, the offer sheets to Broberg and Holloway, the amount of turnover that this team has seen since they went to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers,' Bissonnette continued. 'There has to be some camaraderie and familiarity with players that you're playing with and you've gone to battle with. And yet, year over year, over year, you're looking at six, seven, eight different changes, and we keep saying, 'Oh, this team's better than we saw in years past. They've made improvements.' Yeah, right, that's BS.'
He emphasized the need for goaltending and role players to step up, noting that McDavid has been playing through injuries. 'But you're going to need some big saves. You're going to need some big plays from guys who are role players. And I just I'm a little bit disgusted with the way that they've surrounded him over the last two years, and how they've moved off of pieces that I thought were working to begin with when they were so close,' Bissonnette concluded.
The Oilers now face an offseason of uncertainty, with questions surrounding the supporting cast around McDavid and the direction of the franchise.
