Calgary soccer fans brave rain for Canada World Cup warmup

More than 46,000 people, including a sizable contingent from Calgary, attended Canada's World Cup warmup game against Uzbekistan on Monday, June 1, 2026. Canada won the game, hosted at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium in rainy conditions, 2-0.

A day-long deluge could not dampen the spirits of Calgarians who travelled to Edmonton Monday to watch the Canadian men's national soccer team play a pre-tournament friendly ahead of this month's FIFA World Cup.

As part of a junket organized by the Calgary Minor Soccer Association (CMSA), two charter buses full of Calgary soccer players and their families made the three-hour trek north to watch Canada beat Uzbekistan 2-0 at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Calgary contingent, which included representatives from all 31 of the city's youth soccer clubs, were among more than 46,000 fans who packed into Commonwealth Stadium, despite steady rain that fell before, during and after the match.

A Postmedia journalist was invited on the trip, which according to a CMSA official was funded by corporate sponsor Surerus Murphy Joint Venture and anonymous philanthropists.

"It was just a big community event and an opportunity for us to gather and celebrate the beautiful game," said Carlo Bruneau, CMSA's executive director. "It was supposed to be nice and sunny... but despite the weather conditions we faced today, we still got to taste that."

Others from Calgary — likely in the hundreds — made their own journey north to cheer on the Canadians in the national team's first match in Alberta since 2021.

"We obviously had limited seating, but we had an additional allotment of tickets from Canada Soccer and there were many others from our soccer clubs who made the trip," Bruneau said. "Some probably declined to go after seeing the weather, but we made sure every one of our clubs was represented."

Jonathon Osorio and Jayden Nelson scored to give Canada the win, both goals coming in the second half.

A once-in-a-generation opportunity

Canada's World Cup journey will begin June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Toronto's BMO Stadium. Afterward, they will fly to Vancouver to face Qatar and Switzerland at BC Place on June 18 and 24. Advancement to the subsequent rounds will depend on Canada's results in the group stage.

This will be Canada's third time competing at the quadrennial World Cup, after qualifying in 1986 and 2022. However, Canada lost all six of its games in those two tournaments, scoring just two goals.

This year's World Cup will be FIFA's largest ever, with 48 nations competing. It is also the first time the tournament has been spread across three countries, with the U.S. and Mexico also hosting. As co-host, Canada was not required to qualify this time.

"The FIFA World Cup does not come to Canada very often," Bruneau said. "We had the women's World Cup (in 2015) but having the men's World Cup is probably a once-in-a-generation opportunity. With that on our doorstep... the idea of making a memorable moment for our Calgary soccer community, to give them the chance of a lifetime to head up to Edmonton to see a World Cup warmup match, was something we could not pass up."

Sixteen-year-old Zor Dhaliwal, a player from the Calgary soccer community, expressed the growing excitement: "Canada is great in many other sports, but soccer is growing day by day. I think it is time we all focus together on the one common goal of getting as far as we can in the World Cup."
