Canucks Hire Manny Malhotra as New Head Coach in Major Rebuild Move
Canucks Hire Manny Malhotra as New Head Coach

The Vancouver Canucks have named Manny Malhotra as their new head coach, the 23rd in franchise history, replacing the fired Adam Foote. The announcement was made on Monday, marking a pivotal moment in the team's long and arduous rebuild. Malhotra, previously head coach of the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks, brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach.

Malhotra's Path to the NHL Bench

Ryan Johnson, now the Canucks' general manager after a restructuring of the hockey operations department, had long anticipated Malhotra's rise. Johnson, who hired Malhotra to lead Abbotsford, noted that the former NHL centre always aspired to coach at the highest level. "He wants to be an NHL coach and we discussed his path — it was an open conversation," Johnson said. "I go through a pretty thorough process in my hiring and I hope they become the next whatever. I tell people that if they're still here after eight years I've done something wrong. They want to elevate but that may not be here." Malhotra guided Abbotsford to the Calder Cup championship in 2025, his first season as a professional head coach, solidifying his credentials.

Rebuilding a Struggling Franchise

The Canucks endured a disastrous 2025-26 season, finishing last in the league. They allowed the most goals, had the worst penalty kill, and scored the second fewest goals. A franchise-record 11-game losing streak and a 9-27-5 home record forced ownership to commit to a full roster rebuild. Malhotra's challenge is immense, but his track record of developing players offers hope. He has worked closely with seven players expected to feature on the Canucks' roster next fall, encouraging them to elevate their execution and consistency.

Malhotra's ability to connect with players was evident during his tenure as an assistant coach with the Canucks from 2010 to 2013 and later with the Toronto Maple Leafs. His former teammate, Henrik Sedin, now co-president of hockey operations, was instrumental in the hiring decision. The Sedin twins, along with Johnson, believe Malhotra can unlock the potential of underperforming stars like Elias Pettersson.

A Fresh Start for the Canucks

Malhotra, 46, played 991 NHL games as a gritty centre and faceoff specialist, including 159 with the Canucks. His coaching journey began in player development before stints as an assistant in Vancouver and Toronto. The Canucks' fan base, weary from years of disappointment, now has reason for optimism. Malhotra's hiring signals a new era focused on development and accountability.

More to come as the Canucks prepare for the draft and free agency under their new leadership.
