Canucks' Pettersson Trade Rumors: Wings, Kings Possible

Canucks' Roster Rebuild Sparks Pettersson Trade Speculation

The Vancouver Canucks are facing a pivotal offseason as they commit to a full roster rebuild, leaving no player untouchable. Among the most intriguing trade candidates is star center Elias Pettersson, who has publicly stated his desire to remain with the team but may benefit from a change of scenery.

With the Detroit Red Wings potentially losing captain Dylan Larkin and the Los Angeles Kings needing a veteran center after Anze Kopitar's retirement, both teams have emerged as possible suitors for the struggling but talented Pettersson.

Pettersson's Situation in Vancouver

Pettersson, 27, has a no-movement clause but might consider a trade to Los Angeles, where he would face less media scrutiny and his wife previously lived for 13 years. Despite his massive $11.6 million cap hit and recent decline in production, some analysts believe he can return to 70-80 points with a fresh start.

Canucks co-president Henrik Sedin told the 100% Canucks podcast: "It's up to him now. We've all been here to help him. But in the end, this is professional sports." General manager Ryan Johnson added that he had an open conversation with Pettersson, emphasizing no judgment and no expectations beyond being himself.

Detroit Red Wings: A Potential Fit

The Red Wings are under pressure after missing the playoffs for 10 straight seasons. Larkin, 29, has submitted a trade list including the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Florida Panthers. Detroit has approximately $32 million in salary cap space and could absorb Pettersson's contract, especially with the cap rising to $104 million next season.

In a trade, the Canucks could either move Pettersson's full salary for nothing in return or retain some salary to acquire prime prospects like 2023 first-rounder Nate Danielson or 2022 first-rounder Marco Kasper.

Los Angeles Kings: Alternative Destination

The Kings are unlikely to part with Quinton Byfield but could offer winger Liam Greentree, a 2024 first-round pick who posted 123 goals and 283 points in the last three OHL seasons. Vancouver needs help on the flanks, making Greentree an attractive piece.

Draft Implications

A Pettersson trade would also impact the Canucks' draft strategy. With two first-round picks in the 2026 NHL draft (June 26-27 in Buffalo), Vancouver could target OHL standout center Caleb Malhotra, son of head coach Manny Malhotra, as the third overall pick. Adding an affordable veteran center on a short-term deal would ease the transition during the rebuild.
