Canada's expected World Cup starters endured a difficult first half against Uzbekistan, but it was the substitutes who shone in Monday's friendly at Commonwealth Stadium, leading the team to a 2-0 victory.
Osorio Breaks the Deadlock
Jonathan Osorio, a veteran of the Canadian program, slotted the ball under Uzbek goalkeeper Abuvokhid Nematov just before the hour mark to give Canada the lead. The goal came from a deft pass by forward Tani Oluwaseyi, which allowed Osorio to break through Uzbekistan's five-man defensive line.
Oluwaseyi later set up Jayden Nelson, who is not currently on the World Cup roster, for an insurance goal in stoppage time.
Physical Test for Canada
Uzbekistan, managed by defensive legend Fabio Cannavaro, proved to be a tough physical challenge. Early in the match, Canadian center back Derek Cornelius was floored by a late challenge from Azizion Ganiev, and Farrukh Sayfiev received a yellow card for a tackle on Ismael Kone. The Canadians struggled to cope with the physicality, and only the heroics of goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau kept them in the game.
Crepeau's First-Half Heroics
Crepeau made several crucial saves to deny Eldor Shomurodov, who could have scored a hat trick in the first half. Shomurodov had a breakaway early on but chipped the ball wide after Crepeau charged off his line. Later, Crepeau dove to his left to deflect a low shot, and before halftime, he parried a point-blank header from a free kick.
Canadian coach Jesse Marsch has yet to decide whether Crepeau or Dayne St. Clair will start in goal for the World Cup. Crepeau's performance was a strong statement.
Looking Ahead
Canada's next match is the World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12. This friendly provided a valuable physical test against a tough opponent.
