A difficult day unfolded for the Diggs family this week, as professional football player Stefon Diggs faced serious criminal charges on the same day his brother, Trevon Diggs, was released from his NFL team.
Serious Allegations Against Patriots Star
New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been formally charged with felony strangulation or suffocation, along with misdemeanor assault and battery. The charges, reported on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, stem from an alleged incident that occurred on December 2.
According to authorities, the alleged incident took place the day after the Patriots' Monday Night Football victory over the New York Giants. A woman, who identified herself as a private chef, reported to police on December 16 that Diggs entered her unlocked bedroom and struck her across the face following a discussion about money he allegedly owed her.
The police report, cited by ESPN, states that when the woman tried to push Diggs away, he allegedly attempted to choke her by placing his elbow around her neck before throwing her onto a bed. The woman initially told police she did not wish to press charges but decided to proceed on December 22.
Diggs and Patriots Deny the Accusations
The Patriots organization issued a statement acknowledging the accusations. "Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations," the team said. "We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary."
Diggs' attorney, Michael DiStefano, argued in court for the police report to be impounded. The lawyer also revealed that his client had made a financial offer to the alleged victim in an attempt to resolve the matter.
The 32-year-old, four-time Pro Bowler is in his first season with New England after signing as a free agent. He is a veteran of 11 NFL seasons, having previously played for the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans. His arraignment is currently scheduled for January 23, 2026, though the judge is considering a defense request to postpone it until March.
A Brother's Career Setback on the Same Day
In a coincidental and compounding blow to the family, Stefon's younger brother, Trevon Diggs, was released by the Dallas Cowboys on the same Tuesday afternoon. The cornerback was waived with one game remaining in the regular season.
Trevon Diggs, 27, was in the second year of a massive five-year, $97 million contract extension signed in 2023. The deal included approximately $33 million in guaranteed money. However, his time in Dallas since signing has been marred by significant injuries:
- Suffering a torn ACL just two games into the 2023 season.
- Missing two months in 2023 due to a concussion from a home accident.
- Missing six games in the 2024 season because of groin and knee injuries.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that the release "was the culmination of multiple factors spread over time, including both performance and other elements." The Cowboys organization felt it was the right time for both parties to move on.
The dual developments mark a stark professional and personal low for the Diggs brothers, casting significant uncertainty over their immediate futures in the National Football League.
